Day #94, #95: U-Haul to the rescue

The three rides after Ely were, 79 miles, 70 miles and 110 miles, with about 10 mountain ranges to crest, 100 degree Fahrenheit temperatures in the valleys and no rest stops along the path. I tried to find a way to skip just the first two, but in the end a one-way U-Haul rental was only possible from Ely -> Fallon, so I decided to take that option.

It turns out I had simply not done enough research on Nevada... what I've learned now is that it has more mountain ranges than any state other than Alaska, and that Route 50 is known as "The loneliest road in America." In the almost a week since I've been in the state I have only seen one, single bicyclist (apart from me)... I think all the others got the memo...

Along the way, I stopped in Eureka to take a nap in the truck and grab some lunch. Overheard a conversation about how Muslims are taking over Spain, France and New York City... I stayed at a lovely Bed and Breakfast in Austin, a city that hit it's peak in the Silver mining rush of the 1880's, and then had breakfast in Middlegate and got to talk with an Afghan War veteran about how he's like to take his daughter to Australia and Europe to see some of the nicer parts of the world, since he's already seen some of the less nice ones. He even let me air out my Hadley cells + Coriolis effect explanation for why the prevailing winds in the US are West to East :-)

We know our limitations and somehow powerless when facing the brutal nature, or rather, the limitations of a good bike, that might be the reason smart people build U-haul to save the bike from melting in the heat :-).

Chris, taking the U-Haul was a really smart decision! Ten mountain ranges and 100-degree heat? That’s not a bike ride—it’s a survival test! We’re so glad you trusted your instincts. 👍 Alex and I are loving your stories and all the interesting people you meet—keep them coming, and we’re cheering you on every step of the way! 🚴🚚

Oh my god climbing those mountains/covering that distance in the heat sounds brutal. I'm SO glad you were able to get the U-haul!
