Today's ride was dreamy... the first 30 miles was on great bike paths that weaved back and forth part way up the side of the mountains. I started pretty early, so for the first few hours the paths were almost cmpletely empty. Not having to worry about traffic, I just mused on the similarities with Switzerland, the amount of new construction... how sterile most of it was, but also built to such high construction standards. It somehow gave the feeling that some great centralized power was benevolently arranging the world... was this the Mormon Church or Utah government? I couldn't quite tell...
This is an example of the "sterile" building style:

And, like yesterday, I had several lovely interactions with people on the trail: Michelle, a Mormon 60 year old, who had run the Boston Marathon twice and was planning to visit Boston soon with her husband. I gave her suggestions of the Isabella Stewart Gardiner Museum, and the Minuteman bike path and the park in Concord with the "rude" bridge where the first shots of the revolution were fired. Another guy was building up his stamina to join Strava rides of 60-80 miles.
Then Google Maps led me off the bike paths and down a gentle downhill, past Brigham Young University and through some great industrial back-roads...

Stats: 55 miles, started at 6:45am, ended at 2pm, 6.5 hours of actual riding:

We saw people walking and jogging in the videos, must feel very different from biking on highway. Surprised to see those buildings in middle of…grass. If ignore the shining modern buildings the hilly grassy settings would remind us spaghetti western movies :-).
I can't believe you're biking to Nevada!
Sterile and functional is interesting to think about... The exact opposite of those windy narrow cobblestone roads in Beacon Hill
That one rider recognized that you were a through-biker :)
I like the idea that you've been training for this ride your whole life... Almost remjnds me of the story structure of slumdog millionaire
Chris, this ride really does sound dreamy! Mountain views, quiet paths! We love how you blend travelogue with sociology and still have energy for trail conversations. 😊 Alex and I are especially glad Boston got a shoutout (solid recommendations, by the way!). Keep those wheels - and thoughts! - rolling! Safe and enjoyable ride!! 👍🚴
